How much should I really spend on an engagement ring?

Engagement rings are one of the most valued and meaningful purchases you will make. Not only are they a big investment but they also carry a big sentimental price tag. Picking out an engagement ring is a tough task for a lot of guys and a lot of things go through their heads. Will she like it? Is it going to fit? But the biggest one that no one talks about is: How much should I spend on an engagement ring in the first place?

Men, just by their nature, tend to be a lot more practical than us girls. They tend to get sticker shock when beginning to look at how much to spend on an engagement rings. The first thing they think of is all of the practical things they can buy with $xx,000 dollars instead of a gemstone. Girls, well we just follow the pretty shiny things.

So lets get down to it.

So, how much should you really spend on an engagement ring?

We have all heard the old school rule that you should spend one month salary on an engagement ring. That was updated to two or three months. That can add up to a lot of money. Quick.

Before you start panicking, I am going to let you in on a little secret. This was a marketing strategy put into play by, you guessed it, the diamond dealers. Talk about letting the fox guard the henhouse. After World War II they needed to increase their sales and this was a pretty successful campaign to make that happen. We still are talking about it as an engagement ring buying strategy today.

Engagement Ring Calculator

The sky is the limit guys. You can certainly spend high 5 figures on that big 3 ct. diamond. The good news is that you don’t have to spend that much on an engagement ring. There is a trend now that we have seen here at Rough Luxe Jewelry, where brides are choosing a unique stone over a traditional high dollar white diamond.

Yay for you! And yay for your bank account. So throw away that engagement ring calculator. Because the new trend is that brides are not necessarily concerned with how much you spent. They are looking for something unique and custom designed for them. Something with some meaning to it. Not a big price tag.

The real value of an engagement ring ~ Meaningfulness

We find that many of our brides most important criteria is that they want their ring to be meaningful. That’s right guys, not big bling like you thought. They want something that has romantic details, a stone choice that has special meaning or even using heirloom stones from a family member. Also, top on the list is one that fits her personal aesthetic and also lifestyle. If she has a pretty active lifestyle a big blingy ring with a lot of pave is going to end up sitting in her ring box most of the time and not on her finger.

Our brides to be are absolutely loving colored diamonds, and unusually colored sapphires such as Padparascha or Teal Sapphires. Grey diamonds and peach diamonds are two of our most coveted sellers now.  Most of these colored diamonds are Rose Cut Diamonds and will sit lower to the finger. Perfect for active girls.

And not only are they are a fraction of the price of a comparable white diamond, but you can often afford a much bigger stone and it will still be a lot less money at the end of the day.

If your bride to be absolutely loves the look of a big white diamond we offer Lab Grown Diamonds which are visibily, structurally and chemically identical to natural diamonds, but are easy on the wallet.

We also offer custom, bespoke engagement rings so that you can design your dream ring that tells your story perfectly. We can also work with heirloom diamonds to create your ring.  Contact us and we will be happy to help you out with a wonderful option that won’t break the bank.

Sweet little beauties, octahedron diamonds

Sweet little beauties…a laurel of daisies, a beautiful solitaire diamond set in golden leaves and a raw octahedron diamond set in a halo of diamonds.
Did you know that octahedron diamonds are actually uncut diamonds in their purest form…just as they come out of the ground. If you look back at Byzantine rings or old Roman rings from the Vatican you will see that the rings were all octahedrons. We adore the raw look & feel of these diamonds

Engaged in Paris where it all began

When my husband proposed to me in Paris on the steps of Versailles he asked me to design my own engagement ring. I was beyond thrilled to be engaged to the most awesome man in the world…and was just as excited to be able to create my own engagement ring.

There ensued a journey of first finding the perfect stone and ultimately create my perfect ring. I searched and obsessed over what this would be. Pretty much just like every bride to be does.

I was lucky enough to have access to some of the worlds best diamond dealers and had the most perfect stone fall into my lap unexpectedly. It was a very, very rare 1.5ct Grey Chameleon Diamond. It is a color changer and changes color according to the heat & light. This one changes color from a smokey grey to a light green. They are highly coveted…and kind of like trying to find the Easter Bunny…you hear about them, but never really see them.

I was hooked. I fell in love with the process of designing my ring and watching it evolve. I also fell in love with rare and alternative stones. Especially rose cut diamonds.

I also knew that other brides would feel the same way. They were searching to find something unique and alternative for their engagement rings…instead of the same old overpriced, cookie cutter, manufactured jewelry from the big name stores.

This is where Rough Luxe shines. Over the years I have cultivated relationships with stone dealers from all over the world…some of them own the mines. I get first pick of their gems and choose each stone myself for its unique and special character. I always remember that feeling I had when looking for my stone & designing my ring.

To me it wasn’t just a certain carat stone or a fancy ring. It was a symbol of our relationship and the life we were going to build together. It meant so much more. And it had to be perfect. Or at least perfect to me!

The secret to affordable engagement rings

An engagement ring is not just a ring. It is one of the most important investments in your relationship and is precious for reasons more than one. It’s a commitment of togetherness, a promise of marriage, a symbol of your pristine love and above all, a bond that will always keep you both tied to each other. It is indeed a monumental gift but is there any use in dreaming about getting engaged when you can’t afford the ring? Well, getting a ring might be easier than you think. Don’t get daunted by the cost, for there are plenty of options of Affordable Engagement Rings. However, the term ‘Affordable’ holds different meaning for different people, whatever you budget is, we have one for everyone. Here at Rough Luxe we pride ourselves in having the most beautiful rings for every budget.

here are the secrets for a stylish and affordable engagement ring:

set your budget:

Well, before heading to shop for your engagement ring, carefully set a budget. Though we’ve got you covered in every budget but at least have some tentative budget in your mind. There is no specific rule for an engagement ring’s budget and everyone has his own purchasing power. Respect yours and spend accordingly. Irrespective of your budget, we have a wide collection of choices to help you select a perfect engagement ring.

choose your stone wisely:

We have already discussed in our earlier blog how colored stones have always held an illustrious position in engagement rings. The increasing trend of colored engagement rings can help you get an engagement ring which is unique as well as affordable.

Moissanite and Diamonds are same in every aspect expect that the diamonds are slightly harder in texture than Moissanite, yet no one can find the difference between the two with a bare eye. With Moissanite almost one tenth of the cost of diamonds, people prefer Moissanite rings over Diamonds rings. Moissanite engagement rings work as perfect alternative engagement rings for Diamonds.

People often have this misconception that Sapphire Engagement Rings are very costly, however, that is not entire true.  In general, a Sapphire Engagement ring can be significantly more affordable than the more common diamond ring and can be within everyone’s reach. Having a sapphire as the center stone instead of a diamond can provide you with a distinctive look for a smaller price.  We have a wonderful selection of lavender, yellow, peach and pink sapphires…pretty much every color of the rainbow. Please feel free to contact us to begin the process of designing your affordable dream engagement ring.

select a more detailed setting:

A glorified way to get a more distinctive yet affordable engagement ring is to step up the detailing. The price of a diamond increases with the increase in its size, however, smaller sized diamonds are much cheaper. Thus, selecting a ring setting with diamond accents is an intelligent way to create a stunning ring within budget.

choose a ring without a center stone:

Today, people are constantly looking for options that seem unique and trendy. There has been a gradual shift of choice from the traditional center gemstone engagement ring to the non-traditional engagement ring without any center gemstone. Despite of not having a center gem stone, these alternative engagement rings have gorgeously shining diamonds that are affordable but never look cheap. A common example of this would be our Three Blessings ring which features three rose cut diamonds. Or our Past, Present and Future ring.

Give your relationship a beautiful start with an engagement ring, which is as unique as your love and as affordable as your budget. Whatever your requirements are, we are always there to help you take your first step towards your dreams.

What is a rose cut diamond

What is a Rose Cut Diamond?

We get this question all the time so we thought we would take a few minutes and share with you the legacy of the rose cut diamond, which has an interesting story. It was named after the petals of a rose flower to which it bears resemblance. Pretty romanitcal, right?

A rose cut diamond is a diamond with flattened base and a faceted domed peaked top. This antique-style diamond cut can take on many shapes with squarish-round, pear, and oval shapes being the most popular. Unlike the more rigid brilliant cut diamond parameters, a rose cut diamond can have from 3 to 24 facets, each bringing a slight variation to the shape. Because of the attraction of the romantic and exotic appeal of this cut, rose cut diamond engagement rings are the most sought after these days. In fact my own engagement ring is a 1.75ct grey chameleon rose cut diamond. It is a color shifter, which means it changes color from grey to greenish yellow in different temperatures and light.

The rose cut diamond is one of the oldest cutting styles for diamonds and is the original diamond cut of heirloom and antique jewelry. The history of the rose cut diamond dates back to the 15th century. It originally emerged in India and gained extreme popularity during the Georgian Period, 17th century and the Victorian Period, 19th century. Choosing a rose cut diamond will give your engagement ring a unique old-world feel, which we love.

During the early 19th century, the development of more contemporary diamond cutting techniques allowed for very sophisticated and brilliant shapes. During those days, the evaluation of diamonds was done through the light of candles in which the yellow or grayish color diamond sparkled warmly. However, with the widespread of electrical lighting, the consumers were more derived towards the diamonds that exhibit the most sparkle.

Modern rose cut diamonds are fairly rare. Only one in a thousand diamonds is made into a rose cut today. Here at Rough Luxe, I spend a lot of time traveling and developing relationships with dealers across the world to bring you the best rose cut diamonds we can find. Most rose cuts, found in antique jewelry from the 17th & 18th century, have some inclusions that add a unique personality to each diamond.

Rose cut diamonds continue to be made and polished by hand while the brilliant cut diamonds are cut by machine. Since the rose cut diamonds are made and polished by hand, they have a less manufactured look in comparison to the brilliant cut diamonds.

Though rose cut diamond rings are designed in a variety of styles and metals, they are often wrapped in a bezel setting offering the most protection to the diamond as it is completely encircled by metal. A rose cut diamond is a truly unique choice for an alternative engagement ring.

At Rough Luxe Jewelry we are are using rose cut diamonds to create contemporary designs with vintage inspired look, adding unique old world vibes to their pieces. Whether you design grey rose cut diamond engagement ring or colored rose cut diamond engagement ring, this unusual cut is definitely a timeless show stopper.

Grey Chameleon Halo Engagement Ring

Ever since I got engaged and decided to make my own engagement ring…(after all how can a guy buy a ring for a jewelry designer…talk about pressure)…I have been wanting to add an engagement line to Island Cowgirl. Our new division is called Rough + Luxe and we deemed it worthy to have its very own website.

I have created a lot of commissioned bespoke pieces for clients over the last few years but it has always been a dream to do a proper line where clients can see exactly the ring they were getting instead of only a sketch.

The samples were slowly  carved one by one and stones are painstakingly being chosen and set…and I am finally finding some time to breathe some life into this dream. I don’t think I have been this excited about something in a long time…short of getting my horse!

The signature pieces in this line will be our Halo Engagement Rings…They really have always been my personal favorite…and the inspiration comes from the engagement ring I made for myself when I married the love of my life three years ago. My 18k gold Halo Engagement Ring had a beautiful 1.75ct Grey Chameleon Diamond that I searched high and low for. I have never seen another rose cut diamond like this. This particular rose cut diamond is a color changer…which means that it will change from yellow to green to grey in the light & heat.

It’s never the same and always evolving…kind of like me.

We are going to be offering a variety of center stones from diamonds, to rare peach sapphires, to Moissanite to my new obsession…Octahedron raw diamonds! If you are not familiar with these…then you are in for a treat. I will be doing a detailed blog post about the history of these later.
