Art Deco Engagement Rings ~ Why we love them

Art Deco Engagement Ring

Art Deco engagement rings are elegant, timeless and so very classic. This is why we offer so many different styles of both Art Deco wedding bands and Art Deco Engagement Rings. The word Art Deco is tossed around quite a bit, but what truly is a vintage Art Deco ring?

The Art Deco era in the jewelry got its name from the ‘Exposition International des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes’. In 1925, it was held in Paris and was put on by the French government to highlight a new style they were calling “moderne”. The focus was on Architecture, furniture, glass and of course jewelry. There were 15,000 exhibitors from twenty different countries which later became known as the Art Deco Exposition.

The Art Deco era from about 1915 to the 1930’s, however people remember it best as the “roaring 20’s”.

Instead of the gently curving vines and romantic flowers that were so prominent in the Edwardian era (1890-1912), Art Deco Engagement rings were all about geometric lines and angles. Art Deco rings and wedding bands featured a lot of zig-zag, triangular and trapezoidal shapes. White gold and platinum led the way and for the first time yellow gold fell out of favor.

Different colored stones, often sapphires, were incorporated into these designs to accent the bold geometric patterns. This often made for incredibly striking engagement rings and even wedding bands. You would often see intricate filagree work in these Art Deco beauties.

My love for all things Art Deco came from my time living in Miami. I lived for many years on South Beach, in fact even before it was called South Beach. At that time it was just abandoned hotels and nursing homes. But the amazing Art Deco architecture was still there, albeit in shambles. In fact my good friend owned Al Capone’s old house which was Art Deco at its finest, complete with false doors and escape tunnels that you would expect any proper gangster to have.

I found many cast off art deco engagement rings & jewelry in pawn shops and thrift stores during this time. Each one was more beautiful than the last. I cannot tell you how much it warms my heart that Art Deco Engagement Rings are making a comeback because they truly are amazing treasures.

Our Art Deco style engagement rings & wedding bands are inspired by this great era of opulence and beauty. We would be love to design one just for you!

Sweet little beauties, octahedron diamonds

Sweet little beauties…a laurel of daisies, a beautiful solitaire diamond set in golden leaves and a raw octahedron diamond set in a halo of diamonds.
Did you know that octahedron diamonds are actually uncut diamonds in their purest form…just as they come out of the ground. If you look back at Byzantine rings or old Roman rings from the Vatican you will see that the rings were all octahedrons. We adore the raw look & feel of these diamonds

What is the difference between white gold and palladium white gold

palladium white gold ring diamond

Who doesn’t love to display to show off your beautiful new engagement ring? However, wading through the complicated choices of metals for your engagement ring can be a little confusing. There are so many new combinations in the market and certain options that appear similar from the naked eye can actually be totally different. Thus, before you finalize a particular band, just be aware of the point of differentiation among some most popular wedding band metals – White Gold & Palladium White Gold. Let us have a look at both of them:

white gold

Gold is a typical yellow colored metal and thus, other metals are required to be added to give it a white color. To change the hue of the metal and provide it the strength and durability, various alloys work together. These alloys include silver, copper, nickel, zinc and even palladium! The composition and usage of these metals determine the price and style of White Gold. White Gold is available in various carats, ensuring that there is one for every budget. Keep in mind that white gold in its natural form will not be bright white as we are used to seeing when we look at engagement rings. White gold will have a slightly yellow hue.

The only way to get while gold really, really white is to plate it with rhodium. At Rough Luxe we do not recommend plating your ring. First of all if you are going to have rhodium put over the white gold…you may as well just get a rhodium ring. Second, your ring will need to be replated every six months to a year. This usually involves removing the stones, replating and resetting it again. You can see how this would damage the delicate settings over time. If you like a really really true white color we suggest going with Platinum. Of course Platinum is a lot more expensive and a lot heavier. It is also notoriously more difficult to work with and requires a jeweler to have a whole different set of tools to work with it.

Palladium White Gold

Palladium White Gold is a noble metal and part of the Platinum family of metals. It is one of the rarest metals of the world and is a perfect choice for a wedding band or engagement ring. It has a silvery grey color and a beautiful, soft luster.

Palladium is high in quality, is hypo-allergic (non-nickel based) and strong. It doesn’t tarnish with the passage of time or lose whiteness when worn, and doesn’t need replating.  Palladium White Gold stays natural white without any regular maintenance and care, and is lighter in weight as compared to platinum. It is also a more affordable option as compared to Platinum.

Palladium has emerged as a new trend in the engagement rings and due to its ever growing popularity, it has now been acknowledged as a precious metal. Palladium is almost of the same price as white gold but keeping in mind the ever increasing price of gold, overall Palladium should be less expensive. We love working with Palladium White Gold and can design any customized ring for you. The second reason not to select 14k White Gold is that it is usually mixed with nickel to give it its white tone. Many people have nickel allergies and wearing your new engagement ring is not the time you want to discover that.

Palladium White Gold

Which is why our white metal of choice for an engagement ring is Palladium White Gold.  Palladium White Gold is a noble metal and part of the Platinum family of metals. It is one of the rarest metals of the world and is a perfect choice for a wedding band or engagement ring. Salt and pepper grey diamond

Swooning over this salt and pepper rose cut diamond

Salt and pepper grey diamond
Salt and pepper rose cut diamond set in 14K palladium white gold

Salt & Pepper diamonds were all the rage this buying season at the Tucson Gem Show which I attend every February. Dealers, miners, artists and stone cutters all converge in the desert and present their best finds for the year.

It is an important place to see whats new, whats up and coming and what stones are hot. Now it is no secret that I have been a big fan of rose cut diamonds…as I chose one for my own engagement ring. I love the old world feel and how they are imperfect, yet beautiful at the same time. And each one is unique…kind of like every marriage. Ok…not just kind of…exactly.

This year Salt & Pepper diamonds were in high demand. If you saw some…you better buy them because if you walked off to think about it…they were gone. I have a lovely client in California who I was on the hunt for the perfect Grey rose cut diamond for a ring I was making for her. And these were perfect.

We set the Salt & Pepper diamond in 14k rose gold and added diamonds around the bezel. It came out so unique and beautiful. She was in love!

heart diamond ring, ring size

how to find her ring size*

Careful planning long before popping ‘the question’ can help make the most romantic and unforgettable proposal. While not every proposal is the same and so does each couple’s way of getting engaged, some people want their engagement to be a surprise. This ‘surprise element’ definitely sounds romantic but at the same time makes picking an engagement ring difficult.
So often here at Rough Luxe, people ask us about how to find the ring size of their girlfriend or significant other without them knowing. Well, don’t worry; we have some great tips that can help you choose the perfect engagement ring size for your beloved!

Here are some of tips and tricks that can help you find her ring size without her knowing

  1. Act innocent:

If you are absolutely set to make a surprise proposal but still want to find out her ring size directly from her, act innocent in front of her. Pretend that you need to buy a ring for your relative and casually ask her ring size casually for reference that too in a very subtle manner. You may even purchase an inexpensive ring and have her try it once. This, to an extent, will help you get an idea of the engagement ring size you would need for her.

Tip: Make sure that the pretend recipient hands are similar in size to that of your girlfriend.

  1. Ask Her Friends:

Friends often play a major role in love stories, why not yours? If you know your girlfriend’s friends, ask one of them for her ring size. Chances are that she might already have the insight but in case if she doesn’t, she can get it for you. She may enact for ring shopping for fun with your girlfriend and get her ring finger professionally sized or can find out some other way! Leave it to her friend’s imagination. We’re sure she will have something to help you out!

  1. Ask Her Family:

If you are in good terms with her family and have a comfort level with them, you can involve them in planning the surprise. Her Mom, sister or cousin can easily help you in picking an engagement ring perfect to her size.

Caution: Remind them not to spill the beans out of excitement!

  1. Borrow One Of Her Rings:

You might borrow one of her rings for a day but you need to be careful with this. You got to have a perfect excuse for this or she might get a hint!

Caution: Make sure that the ring you borrow is the one which she wears on a similarly sized finger!

  1. Compare Fingers:

Though this trick can be quite difficult, but if you are really good at estimation, you can go for it. Hold her hand gently into yours and check if her finger is similar in size to any of your fingers. Who knows her ring finger might be of the same size as that of your pinky?

  1. Ask Your Partner:

Well, if you both have discussed marriage earlier as well, ask her directly about her ring size! Don’t worry of the surprise being spoiled! After all, you are not going to tell her when and how you are planning to give it to her. Just ask her you want to have all the information with you to be ready in advance so as to make everything perfect on the actual engagement day. We are sure she will fall in love with you all over again thinking about your love for her!

Thus, these are the tips and tricks that can help you get the perfect engagement size ring for her but the risk is always there as these are just estimations! If you are going for a customized engagement ring, we recommend having the exact ring size as certain designs might not lend themselves to being easily resized. Eternity bands usually fall into this category.

In the end, no matter how you do, who’s around, where are you, just get a perfect sized engagement ring, gather her close and make her wear the ring with all the love.
